Marybeth Holleman’s newest books are the anthology Alaska Literary Field Guide and the novel Bloom Again. She’s also the author of the poetry collection tender gravity, and nonfiction books including The Heart of the Sound and is the co-author of Among Wolves. Raised by North Carolina’s Smokies, she now lives in the embrace of Alaska's Chugach Mountains.

Alaska Literary Field Guide (available March 1, 2026) is a vibrant and immersive celebration of Alaska’s wild beauty, blending science, storytelling, and stunning artwork.

This unique anthology, edited by Marybeth Holleman, Nancy Lord, and Shaelene Grace Moler, is both an artistic tribute and an educational invitation to connect with the land, water, wildlife, and spirit of the Last Frontier. It’s a field guide like no other—both a reference and a work of art.

Like Alaska, this book contains multitudes. Keep it by your desk as a tool for both reference and inspiration. By turns coolly scientific and ardently rhapsodic, these sharply focused portraits of Alaska animals, plants, and landforms keep us attentive to what is timeless and what is urgently at risk in our time.

More About Alaska Literary Field Guide

Bloom Again, Marybeth’s debut novel, is now available!

Elyse is an empty-nest mother and artist in Alaska, and Astrid is a paleobotany professor in North Carolina. When the seemingly fulfilling lives of these distanced childhood friends are shaken, everything they’ve carefully established—from friends to careers to marriages—shifts, slips, unravels.

“If you love the world, if you fear for its future, you must read Bloom Again. Its beautifully told story lifted me, inspired me, moved me to tears, and gave me ideas, energy, determination, and—yes, I’ll say it— hope.”

Kathleen Dean Moore, author of Great Tide Rising
